Hôtel des Échevins in Bourges

The Hôtel des Échevins in Bourges , the capital of the French department Cher in the Center-Val de Loire region , was built between 1489 and 1492. Since 1886, the building stands on Rue Edouard Branly no. 13 as a monument historique on the list of monuments in France.

history

After the great fire of 1487, the building was erected on the former Roman city fortifications. It served as the Hôtel de ville (town hall) until 1682 and then as a school for the Jesuits . During the French Revolution , the Hôtel des Échevins (fr. Aldermen) was sold as a national good. In 1833 a school was set up again in the building.

The two-storey main wing ( Corps de Logis ) is flanked by a stair tower . In 1624 the architect Jehan Lejuge built an extension at right angles in the Renaissance style with an open gallery on the ground floor.

Todays use

After extensive renovation work, the Maurice Estève Museum was opened in the Hôtel des Echevins in 1993 and exhibits works of modern art.
