Height 108
Kalkberg Höhe 108 is the easternmost hill of the Chemin des Dames ridge in the French department of Aisne . The height 108 (French: Cote 108) lies in the area of the municipality Berry-au-Bac . Its strategically favorable location made it a hotly contested point in the First World War .

The height 108 separates the valley of the Aisne from the valley of the Loivre stream. The Aisne flows north along the height 108 from east to west. The navigable Canal latéral à l'Aisne runs along the Aisne . From the south the Loivre Bach flows into the Aisne at height 108. The Canal de l'Aisne à la Marne runs parallel to the Loivre from north to south. A few hundred meters further west of the Aisne-Marne Canal is the national road from Reims to Laon.
The height 108 in the First World War
As a vantage point, height 108 dominates an area of about 10 km from north to south. During the First World War, the Germans therefore held altitude 108 when they withdrew from the Marne in September 1914.
In 1915 and 1916, the French and Germans waged mine war here . In April 1917, height 108 was fiercely contested in the course of the Battle of the Aisne . Finally, as part of the German spring offensive from the end of May 1918 at the Third Battle of the Aisne, there were fighting at height 108. In French and German military reports , the section of the front is named after the places Berry-au-Bac and Sapigneul .

Height 108 has been a historic monument of the Republic of France since 1937. It is in the rouge zone . Height 108 is not open to the public and is rarely open for guided tours.
