description

Artificially created access

In the spring of 1899, the Gresser lord Albertus von Ohlendorf had the burial mound excavated from the north side. Inside, the excavators found a burial chamber that was shaped like an irregular four-sided room with rounded corners. Its dimensions are four meters in diameter and two meters in height. The walls of the burial chamber consist of small horizontally layered stones. The ceiling was vaulted with the same stones. A layer of fire was found in one area of the burial chamber, one meter long and several centimeters thick. The burial took place on the west wall of the burial chamber. In addition to the remains of a corpse, Stone Age tools were also found there.

During the investigation of the barrow, the excavators built a corridor made of field stone, which leads into the interior of the hill and is still accessible today. Albertus von Ohlendorff also had the burial chamber and the corridor fitted with skylights so that daylight can enter the chamber. The skylights and access are secured with wrought iron bars.
