Horst Keiling

Horst Keiling (born July 28, 1934 in Dresden ) is a German prehistorian .

Life

Horst Keiling passed his Abitur in 1953 and began studying history and prehistory at the Humboldt University of Berlin (HUB). In 1957 he passed the diploma examination and was then research assistant at the Institute for Prehistory and Protohistory of the HUB until 1958, in 1958/59 at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR and from 1959 at the Museum for Prehistory and Early History in Schwerin . 1961 to 1964 Keiling was an unscheduled scientific aspirant. The doctorate took place in December 1964 with a thesis on the subject of the pre-Roman iron age in the Elde-Karthane area , reviewers were Karl-Heinz Otto and Paul Grimm . The PhD B followed in December 1984 at the HUB with the thesis Basics of the culture and settlement development in Mecklenburg during the pre-Roman iron and early Roman imperial times. Summary of the results from 5 monographs and 55 papers , reviewers were Heinz Grünert , Joachim Herrmann and Bruno Krüger .

Keiling, who was a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED), became director of the Schwerin Museum for Prehistory and Early History on January 15, 1981, succeeding Ewald Schuldt . He published the yearbook for the maintenance of historical monuments in Mecklenburg . Since September 1987 he has been teaching as an honorary professor for prehistory at the Wilhelm Pieck University in Rostock , where he remained a lecturer until 2001. In 1992 he retired as museum director and head of the State Office for Land Monument Preservation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
