Geographical distribution and occurrence

The distribution area of the hill master spanner stretches from the Iberian Peninsula through Western and Central Europe to the Central Asian mountains. The warmth-loving species prefers to live on chalky soils and can be found on sunny slopes, hot wasteland and sandy lawns.

Way of life

The moths of a first generation fly from late April to early June. A second generation appears patchy in the months of July and August. Sometimes the moths suckle on the flowers of the barberry ( Berberis vulgaris ) during the day . At night they visit artificial light sources . The caterpillars feed on Hill-Meier ( Asperula cynanchica ), daisies ( Bellis perennis ) and bedstraw species ( Galium ). The species overwinters as a pupa.

Danger

The hill master spanner occurs locally in Germany, but is absent in the northern and northeastern regions and is listed in category 2 (severely endangered) on the Red List of Endangered Species .
