The Hüls und Sicherheit mine was an ocher mine in the municipality of Hilter in the Teutoburg Forest . The iron ocher mined here was used as a pigment in paints and varnishes. The great importance of ocher for Hilter was reflected in the phrase that is still used in the region today: "Hilter's yellow goes around the world".

geology

The Hülsberg in the Teutoburg Forest , in which the ocher deposits are stored, consists of clods of Osning sandstone , which occurs in the Lower Cretaceous and partly also in the Upper Cretaceous . Numerous existing in sandstone crevices have been filled by various precipitation processes with ocher. It is also assumed that there is a connection with the ascent of the Bramscher massif .

Due to the Osning thrust, the storage of the ocher is very different, it ranges from completely flat to almost steep, due to numerous smaller faults, the deposit is partly strongly fissured. The thickness of the deposits in the fissures was up to 2 m wide in places, the iron oxide content in the powdery ocher was around 71 percent by weight. Free carbon dioxide must have been present when the deposit was created .

Dismantling

At the southern base of the sleeve was a tunnel set, the 510 meters in the mountain driven was. This tunnel was connected to a 180 m long tunnel to the north by overcutting . This construction method ensured that the tunnel always supplied itself with fresh weather .

As mining progressed , more and more smaller tunnels and shafts were sunk . In 1879 24 workers were employed on the mine and the associated ochery. A 70 hp steam engine was used in the ocher to supply energy and to separate the ocher from sand and other impurities.

The partly burnt ocher was marketed under the name "Hilter Goldocker" and partly sold as far as the USA. Mining operations were suspended from 1900 and resumed for a short time in 1921/22.
