The seat of the Ministry of Justice is now the 6th Central Government Building in Kasumigaseki , Chiyoda .

The Japanese Ministry of Justice ( Japanese 法 務 省 , hōmu-shō ) is one of the ministries of the central government. It is responsible for the judiciary and the penal system, represents the government in court and is also responsible for registration matters, citizenship law and immigration . The public prosecutor's offices ( 検 察 庁 , kensatsu-chō ), the Public Security Intelligence Agency (PSIA; 公安 調査 庁 , kōanchōsa-chō ) and the investigative commission for public security ( 公安 審査 委員会 , kōanshinsai-iinkai ) are also assigned to the ministry .

The former headquarters of the Ministry - today an annexe - was created in 1895 to designs by Hermann Ende and Wilhelm Böckmann built

The Hōmu-shō goes back to the Ministry of Justice established in 1871 ( 司法 省 , shihō-shō ) in the Japanese Empire ; the transformation, which transferred oversight of the courts to the Supreme Court and established the Attorney General as an independent body, began with the postwar constitution and was completed in 1952.
