Branch Railway company

The Hōraiji Tetsudō ( Japanese 鳳 来 寺 鉄 道 ) was a private railway company in Japan . It was a subsidiary of Toyokawa Tetsudō ; after its establishment in 1921, it built and operated a section of what would later become the Iida line in Aichi prefecture . This was 17.3 km long and connected the Ōmi and Mikawa-Kawai stations in the area of today's city of Shinshiro . After the parent company was taken over by the Meitetsu Group in 1938 , the route was nationalized in 1943.

history

Between 1897 and 1900, Toyokawa Tetsudō had built a railway line from Toyohashi to Ōmi in several stages . The railway company had a concession for further construction in the direction of Shinshiro, but left it unused, so that it expired in April 1904. Various Toyokawa Tetsudō shareholders remained interested in an extension of the route. They applied for a new license in May 1920 and were awarded this one year later. Thereupon took place on September 1, 1923 the establishment of the Hōraiji Tetsudō as a subsidiary with an enlarged circle of shareholders.

View of the route around 1925

The scenic route from Ōmi to Mikawa-Kawai was opened on September 1, 1923 and electrified on July 28, 1925. Since the Hōraiji Tetsudō had no own vehicles, the parent company took over the management. It also expanded the tourist offer along the route, for example a hotel with an onsen at the Yuya-Onsen train station. From December 21, 1933 there was a connection in Mikawa-Kawai to the section of the Sanshin Tetsudō to Tōei, from 1937 there was a continuous rail connection from Toyohashi to Tatsuno . However, at that time it was owned by four different companies.

After the takeover of the parent company by Nagoya Tetsudō , the Hōraiji Tetsudō was part of the Meitetsu Group from December 5, 1938 . All railway systems on the later so-called Iida line were nationalized on August 1, 1943, with which the Hōraiji Tetsudō ceased to exist (the parent company dissolved seven months later).
