life and work

Originally born as Hans Andersen , he added the name of his place of birth in March 1884 to distinguish himself from other bearers of this name. He also used the short form HA Brendekilde. He came from a peasant family and came to Odense to learn the profession of stonemason with the local sculptor. Then Brendekilde began at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen , first studying sculpture, from 1881 also painting, to which he finally devoted himself.

At the academy he met Laurits Andersen , a student from the neighboring village of Ring , who also took the place of birth Ring. Brendekilde and Ring remained friends for life. In the 1880s they worked together on the island of Funen . Her works were influenced by Jean-François Millet and Jules Bastien-Lepage . Brendekilde visited Italy , Egypt , Palestine and Syria . He also dealt with ceramics and the design of church windows.

Brendekilde's earliest works depicted the hard life of the poor peasants. Later he gave up the socially critical subjects and showed rural life from the idyllic side.

Brendekilde married Ida Juliane Antonie geb. Nielsen from Holtug. The couple had several children.
