Hans-Dieter Betz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans-Dieter Betz (born September 29, 1940 in Mannheim ) is a German experimental physicist and emeritus university professor .

Research and teaching

Betz studied physics at the University of Heidelberg and received his doctorate in laser technology in 1967. He taught and researched from 1967 to 1972 as a research associate and assistant professor in the field of atomic physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge , then in the accelerator laboratory of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , completed his habilitation in 1974, and taught as a private lecturer from 1980 to his retirement as professor . From 1994 he expanded his research to atmospheric physics .

Research areas

The focus at the Ludwig Maximilians University was on basic research and international cooperation in atomic and nuclear physics, especially for high-energy atomic collisions. Betz later initiated the group “Atmospheric Electricity of the Atmosphere”. This resulted in the nowcast GmbH spin-off in 2002, in which Betz developed and created the LINET lightning detection system. The system has been operated professionally since then and provides weather services and industrial customers worldwide with real-time and historical lightning data. Together with DLR and NASA , Betz investigated current questions about lightning research.

Betz was also active in scientific border areas and investigated "unconventional water prospection" with dowsing rods on behalf of the German government and the GTZ (Society for Technical Cooperation). His interpretation of the results of his barn experiments in Munich were not accepted by the scientific community.
