Upmann cigar factory

H. Upmann is the name of two cigar brands . One is produced by Cubatabaco in Cuba , the other in La Romana in the Dominican Republic by Altadis , a Spanish-French tobacco company.

history

The history of the company dates back to 1844, but it cannot be clearly traced back. There are at least two different versions of their beginnings. The first version says that the two German brothers August and Hermann Upmann founded the company that year. However, there is disagreement as to whether the "H" is an abbreviation for Hermann or for Hermanos (Spanish for "brothers"). Another version is that the surname of the brothers was Hupmann, but the "H" was removed for aesthetic reasons, as "H. Upmann" looks better than "H. Hupmann". Both are possible because both surnames exist.

They were the sons of the clockmaker and businessman Hermann Friedrich Upmann (1767–1840), who came from Halle in Westphalia, and his wife Johanne Friederike, née. Birkemeyer (1775-1840). According to the South American Journal , Hermann Dietrich Upmann came to Cuba in 1839 to work for the import-export company Gravenhorst & Co. Hermann married Wilhelmine Gravenhorst in 1848. The cigars were probably initially used as a promotional gift for the company's customers. At that time there were still cigars from other factories in boxes with the H. Upmann emblem. That all changed when they bought a cigarette factory and founded their own factory in 1844: the Real Fabrica de Tabaco H.Upmann at 85 San Miguel Street. Over the years, the brand became one of the most popular cigars from Cuba. At the end of the 19th century, the company received several gold medals for its products at world exhibitions, and as early as 1855 the name "Proveedor de Su Majestad Don Alfonso XII, Rey de España". When Hermann Upmann retired in 1890, his nephew Heinrich Upmann took over the company, and the H. Upmann & Co. banking business was taken over by the brothers Hermann and Albert Upmann, Heinrich Runken and Theodore Garbade .

The company ran into trouble with the First World War and in 1922 (or 1932) the company finally went bankrupt. The British company J. Frankau & Co. then acquired H. Upmann and continued production until 1935, before selling the company to Menéndez, García, y Cía . H. Upmann remained in their possession until shortly after the Cuban Revolution . Menéndez and García expanded the product range and created the H. Upmann Montecristo Selection . The well-known Montecristo later developed from this .

After the revolution and the subsequent expropriation of their Cuban property, Menéndez and García moved production first to the Canary Islands and later to the Dominican Republic. The company was then bought by Altadis and is still active there today. The Dominican cigar bears the label “H. Upmann 1844 ".

The brand made in Cuba still exists. Both hand-rolled cigars and cigars with machine-rolled dolls and hand-applied wrappers are produced there, but cigars that are purely machine-made are no longer produced. Since 1844, production has been housed in the H. Upmann factory (renamed José Marti after the revolution) in Havana on Calle Amistad. Since their move in November 2003, most of the cigars have been produced in the new factory on the corner of 23rd and 14th streets in the El Vedado district. The Cuban cigar bears the label “H. Upmann Habana ”.

In addition to cigars, H. Upmann also produces cigarillos and cigarettes .

  • The Cuban cigar industry always claimed that Compay Segundo worked as a torcedor in the Upmann factory in the 1950s. Neither the musician nor the owner at the time, Benjamin Menendez, could remember that.
