HEA (Houben-Elektro-Akustik) was an Austrian manufacturer of electroacoustic devices, in particular a manufacturer of radios , amplifiers and stereo systems . The company existed from 1947 to 1993 and was thus the last independent company of its kind in Austria.

history

Engineer Friedrich Houben (1910–1990) founded HEA (Houben-Elektro-Akustik) in Vienna in 1947 - Mariahilf , Millergasse 9, after he was previously the general agent of C. Lorenz AG . In 1948 the first independently produced radio Autosuper was created .

HEA later moved to Vienna- Wieden , Rechts Wienzeile 37. In 1960, the company moved again to the newly built production building in Vienna- Penzing , Linzer Strasse 235a. In 1962, HEA acquired the radio production from the manufacturer Eumig , who withdrew to the production of film projectors and cameras . In 1967, Friedrich Houben became a partner in the crystal works in Graz , Viktor-Franz-Straße 9. In 1969, HEA took over this company completely and from this time on, in addition to many electrical components, manufactured portable radios ( Trixi series ) in the newly acquired facilities.

HEA-Werke Ing.F. Houben - business card with state award

In the most important Austrian publication of the consumer protection organization Verein für Konsumenteninformation (VKI), the magazine Konsument (No. 7/70), the HEA Trixi radios took first place in the technical evaluation and in the overall evaluation (technology and price) - against toughest foreign competition - ranked. In this test, HEA also dominated the overall ranking for large devices.

On May 13th, 1975 HEA was awarded the federal coat of arms by the Austrian Minister of Economic Affairs H. From this point on, the company was allowed to use the Austrian federal coat of arms in accordance with Section 68 of the Trade Regulations, for example in business transactions with the reference to the status of a state award together with its company logo (see picture on the left).

HEA not only manufactured portable transistor radios and car radios , but also produced its own stereo systems , partly in cooperation with the Swiss company Lenco , which provided the high-quality turntables for them. The quality of these devices reached the Hi-Fi standard according to DIN 45500 (this DIN standard was replaced by EN 61305 in 1996 ). The HEA combination devices were partly built at the Lenco plant in Italy . There was also another collaboration between HEA and Lenco with Kapsch AG .

HEA also became known through its cooperation with the Donauland book club , for which a number of devices (radios, stereo systems) were built with their company label, but otherwise completely identical to the HEA devices.

After the founder's death in 1990, the company had to cease operations in 1993. In this context, alleged problems with the implementation of EU regulations are reported. HEA was the last independent radio manufacturer in Austria. The company was deleted on December 9, 1994.
