The abbreviation HEPHY (pronounced: he-fi ) stands for Institute for High Energy Physics and is part of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . It was founded in 1966 with the task of ensuring Austrian participation in the CERN research center in Geneva . Since then, HEPHY has been involved in various experiments there, which, among other things, resulted in a Nobel Prize ( UA1 detector , Nobel Prize in Physics 1984 for Carlo Rubbia and Simon van der Meer for the discovery of the W and Z bosons).

Current activities

The HEPHY has around 80 employees, five of whom are permanently "stationed" at CERN. Today's CERN participation takes place as part of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), for which the HEPHY hardware contributions to the silicon trace detector (tracker) and the electronics for the decision of physically interesting events (trigger) has delivered and carried out simulations and evaluated measured data. The LHC went into operation on September 10, 2008 and led to the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 .

The HEPHY is also involved in the Belle Experiment ( KEKB ) at the KEK Research Center in Tsukuba , Japan . The knowledge gained there was recognized as part of the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physics for Makoto Kobayashi and Toshihide Masukawa , as it experimentally confirms their theoretical predictions about CP violation .

Since 2013, HEPHY has also been a member of the CRESST and EURECA collaborations that deal with the search for dark matter.

The institute building is located on the site of the former municipal primary school for girls in Vienna-Margareten , Nikolsdorfer Gasse 18.
