The HFB 314 was a German passenger aircraft developed in the 1950s with a jet turbine drive. It was the first in-house development of Hamburger Flugzeugbau and the first development of a civil aircraft in the Federal Republic of Germany after the Second World War . The project ultimately failed due to the lack of funding.

history

In 1957, a competition for commercial aircraft was announced in the Federal Republic of Germany under the aegis of the then Minister of Economics, Ludwig Erhard . Hamburger Flugzeugbau GmbH then developed the HFB 314 for up to 80 passengers under chief engineer Hans Wocke . Wocke used the experience gained from developing the 152 and other types of the Elbe Flugzeugwerke in Dresden , which he had left shortly before. The project received a positive assessment from Lufthansa . However, the Hamburger Flugzeugwerke were not able to finance the development from their own resources and therefore applied to the federal government for funding for the development and construction of two prototypes worth at least DM 55 million, which was finally rejected after long negotiations in 1960 It becomes that the financing was at least also denied in order not to burden the German-French relations, since the HFB 314 would have been in competition with the Caravelle and this would possibly have been superior.

After the failure of the project, Hamburger Flugzeugbau developed the much smaller HFB 320 .

construction

The HFB 314 was planned as a cantilever low- wing aircraft with double delta wings , retractable three-legged landing gear with nose wheel and T-tail unit. The wing was similar to the 160 projected in Dresden, but also not built . The sweep of the inner wings was greater than that of the outer wings. A special feature was the attachment of the engines to the stern. They should be partially integrated into the trunk, i.e. not attached to stems as usual. The aircraft should have a pressurized cabin . The hull was planned as a double tube and would have had a large cargo hold for the time.
