HMS Conqueror

A total of nine ships of the Royal Navy were named HMS Conqueror . Among them is one that was planned but not completed due to the end of the war.

  • The first HMS Conqueror was an armed with eight guns Brander , who was captured in 1745 by France and sold 1748th
  • The second HMS Conqueror was a third class ship of the line armed with 70 guns , launched in 1758 and shipwrecked off Plymouth two years later .
  • The third HMS Conqueror was a 3rd class ship of the line armed with 74 cannons, which was launched in 1773 and decommissioned in 1794.
  • The fourth HMS Conqueror was a 3rd class ship of the line armed with 74 guns, which was launched in 1801 and decommissioned in 1822.
  • The fifth HMS Conqueror was a 1st class ship of the line equipped with a screw propeller and armed with 101 cannons. It was launched in 1855 but was shipwrecked in the Caribbean in 1861 .

  • The ninth HMS Conqueror (S48) was a nuclear submarine that entered service in 1969. It is known for being the only nuclear submarine to ever sank an enemy warship in the Falklands War with the Argentine cruiser General Belgrano . In 1990 it was retired.
