The eighth HMS Conqueror of the Royal Navy was a British battleship of the four-ship Orion class . The ships of the class were also referred to in England as super dreadnoughts. For the first time all heavy artillery was on the midship line. For this purpose, a heavier caliber was introduced with the 13.5 inch guns.
Mission history
The Conqueror's keel was laid on April 5, 1910 at W. Beardmore & Co. at their shipyard in Dalmuir , and was launched on May 1, 1911. On November 23, 1912, she was the last ship of the Orion class for the 2nd Division of the 2nd battleship squadron of the Home Fleet put into service.
In the world war
During the First World War , the HMS Conqueror and her sister ships continued to belong to the 2nd battleship squadron of the Grand Fleet stationed in Scapa Flow .
On December 27, 1914, the sister ship rammed Monarch the Conqueror , both ships were severely damaged. After making makeshift repairs in Scapa Flow , they moved to Devonport for full repairs . On January 20, 1915, the Monarch returned to the fleet. The Conqueror failed until March 1915.
In the Skagerrak Battle of May 31, 1916, the four battleships of the Orion class under Rear Admiral Arthur Leveson formed the 2nd Division of the 2nd Battle Squadron of the Grand Fleet. In the evening battle of the battle fleets, the Conqueror scored no hits, but was not hit either. In total, the Monarch fired 57 rounds during the battle.
The Conqueror stayed with the "Grand Fleet", whose battleships, despite several forays into the North Sea, did not enter a battle until the end of the war.
After the war
Due to the Washington Fleet Agreement , the HMS Conqueror was decommissioned and scrapped in 1922.
