Haageocereus acranthus is a species of plant in the genus Haageocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet acranthus means 'pointed flowering'.

description

Haageocereus acranthus grows columnar with arched or upright, sparsely branched shoots and reaches heights of 1 to 2 meters with diameters of up to 8 centimeters. There are twelve to 14 ribs , which are dissolved in cusps near the tip of the shoot. The closely spaced areoles are yellow to dark brown. The mostly single central spine , occasionally several are present, is directed downwards and up to 4 centimeters long. The 20 to 30 yellow radial spines have a length of up to 1 centimeter.

The greenish white flowers are 6 to 8 inches long. The green fruits are spherical.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Haageocereus acranthus is distributed in the Peruvian regions of Ica and Lima at altitudes of 200 to 2700 meters.

It was first described as Cereus acranthus in 1913 by Friedrich Karl Johann Vaupel . Curt Backeberg placed the species in the genus Haageocereus in 1936 . A synonym is Binghamia acrantha (Vaupel) Britton & Rose (incorrect name, ICBN article 11.4).

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Haageocereus acranthus subsp. acranthus
  • Haageocereus acranthus subsp. olowinskianus (Backeb.) Ostolaza

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
