Hadebald
Hadebald (* before 819; † 841 ) was Archbishop of Cologne from 819 to 841 .
Hadebald was elected the new Archbishop of Cologne in the spring of 819. In 825 he was active as missus Regius (royal messenger). In 826 Hadebald showed an interest in the Nordic mission by giving Saint Ansgar a ship for his missionary trip to Denmark . He consecrated St. Stephen's Church in Werden (Ruhr) and took part in a synod in Mainz in 829. He had been sick since 833. In 838 he appeared on a court day in Aachen.
In 833 his name appeared in the lending library of the cathedral chapter when he borrowed a gospel book, a lectionary, the Proverbs of Solomon. For his sister he borrowed a sacramentary with a lectionary and a one-volume antiphonary, and for her son a volume with psalms. Everything was of the greatest value. Family members lived in the bishop's court since 833. The named and other family members like his brother Helmbald tried to keep their position there even after Hadebald's death. With the letters of Pope Gregory the Great , what appears to be the only manuscript preserved in the scriptorium of the cathedral school at the time in the cathedral library (Hs.93, cat.no.34).
The similarity of names with his predecessor Hildebald (Hildebold) suggests that these two also came from one clan. This presumption is confirmed by the fact that after Hadebald's death in 841 with the nephew Liutbert, the son of Hadebald's brother Hasbald, another clan member was to be brought to the bishopric as an elected bishop . However, a short time later the Bonn documents named another, namely the Arch Chancellor of Emperor Lothar I , Hilduin , the abbot of St. Denis , as the appointed bishop of Cologne. Liutbert was apparently unable to assert himself in Cologne and finally became Bishop of Münster in 849.
The background to this turmoil in Cologne was the conflict between the Carolingian brothers Lothar I and Ludwig the German .
