Liutbert (Cologne)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Liutbert (* before 793; † 871 ) was elected Archbishop of Cologne in 842 and the fourth bishop of Münster from 849 to 870 .

Life

He came from a wealthy family in Ripuaria . This had Saxon roots. After the death of his uncle, the Archbishop of Cologne, Hadebald (the successor of Hildebald), Liutbert was to be brought to the bishopric in 842 as the son of Hadebald's brother Hasbald (Asbald) as the chosen bishop . However, he fell out of favor with Emperor Lothar , but could rely on Ludwig the German . In Archbishop Willibert's (870-889) list of bishops, neither Liutbert nor his successor Hilduin are named.

A short time later, Bonn documents name another, namely the Arch Chancellor of Emperor Lothar I , Hilduin , the abbot of St. Denis , as appointed bishop of Cologne. Liutbert was obviously unable to assert himself in Cologne and was finally resigned to the diocese of Münster in 849. During his reign, the diocese of Münster lost its last rights to the Werden monastery .

Liutbert was heavily involved in imperial politics. In 852 he took part in the imperial synod in Mainz and in 860 in the meeting of the three kings in Koblenz . In that part of the diocese of Cologne that belonged to the territory of Ludwig the German, Liutbert held some legal powers. He also took part in the Worms Council of 868. He was also present at the consecration of the old Cologne Cathedral , which is known as Hildebold Cathedral .

His orientation towards imperial politics meant that he paid little attention to the diocese of Münster. It is known that he supported the establishment of the Nottuln Abbey by his relative Count Liutberg and his son. He generously furnished the Freckenhorst Monastery, which was founded during his tenure, with relics . For this purpose, numerous pieces were procured from southern Gaul .

It is unclear whether the patronage of the cathedral in Münster passed from St. Marien to St. Paul at the time.
