After the death of his predecessor Gerfried , Altfried was appointed third bishop of Münster in 839. Like Gerfried, he was a nephew of Liudger , the first bishop of Münster, and also wrote his biography, the Vita Liudgeri . In the same year Altfried, whose name means “noble protector” or “elf prince”, became the fifth abbot of Werden monastery. During his term of office the completion of the Liudgeridenkrypta of the monastery fell, in which he himself was buried after his death in the year 849.
