Hilduin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hilduin was Archbishop of Cologne from 842 to 848/849 .

Life

The figure of Hilduin is difficult to grasp, especially since he is not even mentioned in some bishops' lists. Archbishop Willibert's (870–889) list names neither Hilduin nor his predecessor Liutbert; The Vita Anscarii reports that Hilduin's successor Gunthar came to the bishopric in 850 after a long vacancy. As early as Christmas 833 Hilduin was in Cologne in connection with negotiations in the dispute between Ludwig the German and his father, Emperor Ludwig the Pious . He is probably identical with the abbot Hilduin of Saint-Denis , whose life is lost in the dark from 840 after his falling out with Charles the Bald and the loss of his abbey.

Presumably, after Hilduin had lost his position, he went to see Emperor Lothar I , who appointed him Archbishop of Cologne in 842. However, he could not enforce his ordination. Presumably Hilduin was only accepted in the sphere of influence of Lothar I, while he was refused allegiance in the rest of the archdiocese. It is also questionable whether he ever received the episcopal ordination, which his Saxon suffragans probably did not want to allow him, because they were on the side of his opponent Liutbert , the follower of King Louis the German. From 844–855 Hilduin is attested as Arch Chancellor of Emperor Lothar I. In 850 an agreement was probably reached. Liutbert became bishop of Münster and Gunthar , Hilduin's nephew, took over the archbishopric of Cologne. In 855 Hilduin seems to have retired to the Prüm monastery .
