Hadrianeia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hadrianeia was an ancient city in the Mysia region of Asia Minor near today's Dursunbey in northwestern Turkey . It belonged to the Roman province of Asia or, in late antiquity, Hellespontus .

As its name shows, the city was founded by the Roman emperor Hadrian , like the nearby cities of Hadrianutherai and Hadrianoi . The era of the city began in AD 131/132. Hadrianeia, located in the mountainous Abrettene area between the Makestos and Rhyndakos rivers on the road between Hadrianoutherai and Kotiaion , was believed to have contributed to the urbanization of the area. It was organized according to the usual pattern of a Greek polis .

The titular bishopric Hadriania ( Italian : Adriania ) of the Roman Catholic Church goes back to a late antique bishopric of the city . The diocese belonged to the church province of Kyzikos .
