Hadronyche modesta is a species of the genus Hadronyche and belongs to the family Atracidae . It is often confused with Atrax robustus because it is similar to this species and their areas of distribution overlap. It was assignedto the genus Atrax by Simon , but reassigned by Gray in 1988. Their distribution area is in Victoria (Australia) , especially in the area around the city of Melbourne ; therefore it is called “Victorian funnel-web spider” in English.

Distribution in Australia (Dandenong Ranges, Victoria)

The female of Hadronyche modesta typically has a black, glowing carapace . The opisthosoma is dark brown to black and is finely ribbed. The male looks very similar to the female, only the legs often have an additional shimmering sheen. In its shape it resembles the trapdoor spider Stanwellia grisea , which occurs in the same area of distribution. However, the body is smaller and darker than that of Stanwellia grisea .

behavior

It places its funnel-shaped or tubular nets in damp, cool places, even in houses. The females stay in this cave for life. In the summer or autumn months, the males wander around looking for females. In doing so, they occasionally end up in houses and bite accidents can occur. The bite causes headaches and nausea, but is not dangerous.

Also Hadronyche TYPES use signal threads to catch their prey. These stumbling threads are spun near the cave entrance. The spiders wait until an insect strikes a stumbling thread, which the spider “listens” for vibrations with its legs in the cave, and then rushes forward and kills the prey.
