The port of Dunkirk (French Grand port maritime de Dunkerque ) is a French North Sea port a few kilometers west of the Flemish city of Dunkerque . From here and from Calais , DFDS ferries run to Dover . The port is France's third most important port and handled 20 million tons in 2016.

history

The port was initially used for herring fishing in the 11th century ; in the 17th century the pirate Jean Bart acted here . In 1848 the port was connected to the railroad .

The port played a special role in World War II : in 1940 the Allies succeeded in evacuating over 300,000 British troops to England at the Battle of Dunkirk before the Wehrmacht reached the city ​​and port.

The port is used to import iron ore , coal and fruits. It has a length of 17 kilometers along the North Sea, an area of ​​7,000 hectares ; it has two entrances and besides Dunkerque there are nine other parishes on it. The port museum shows the history of the port. To the west of the port is the Gravelines nuclear power station .
