Port skippers carry out nautical activities in ports . Port skipper has been an apprenticeship since 2005 , which includes the old professional fields of port skipper, harvester guide and mooring maker .

The tasks of the port Schiffer include the loading and unloading of ships , mooring of vessels and leading port barges and other small vehicles.

The training lasts three years. Port skippers are trained in the training company and in the vocational school.

It is a mono profession , that is, it is trained without any focus or specialization. Slightly more than half of the prospective port skippers (57%) have a secondary school leaving certificate, 43% have an intermediate level.

Robust health is a prerequisite for learning and practicing the profession.

Knowledge of English is an advantage for marine radio, although multilingualism is generally an advantage with regard to the international manning of ships.
