Tailoring of the former reformatory for boys around 1902

The Bastøy Prison ( Norwegian Bastøy landsfengsel ) is a Norwegian prison for custody of prisoners in the province Vestfold og Telemark . It is located on the island of Bastøy in the Oslofjord about 75 kilometers south of Oslo . The island is around 2.6 km². About 100 offenders are on the prison island, which is operated with a liberal concept.

Until 1970 there was a reformatory for boys on the island. This was established in accordance with Norwegian legislation from 1896 on “dealing with neglected children”. The 2010 film King of Devil's Island by Marius Holst addresses the inhumane conditions for the boys in the institution and is based on real events.
