The hornbeam shrew weevil ( Trichopterapion holosericeum ) is a beetle from the subfamily Apioninae .
features
The beetles reach a body length of 2.2–2.7 mm. The beetles have a black basic color. They are covered with a thick bronze-colored hair. The elytra are obovate. The antennae , tibia and tarsi are colored red-brown.
distribution
The species was originally found in the Middle East and Southeastern Europe. At the beginning of the 21st century it spread further and further west and north and is now found in Italy, southern France, Austria and the Czech Republic. The species was first detected in Ticino in 2001. The first find in Germany was made in 2008. Since then there have been further sightings from the Upper Rhine Graben and from the Stuttgart area.
Way of life
The beetles are usually seen between April and October. They are mostly found on common hornbeam ( Carpinus betulus ) and oriental hornbeam ( Carpinus orientalis ). There they drill holes in their nuts . The larvae probably develop in these.
