Hajime Furuta

Hajime Furuta ( Japanese 古田 肇 , Furuta Hajime ; born September 13, 1947 in Gifu , Gifu Prefecture ) is a non-party Japanese politician and has been Governor of Gifu Prefecture since 2005.

Career

Furuta graduated from the Tokyo University Faculty of Law in 1971 and then became a civil servant at MITI . In 1974 he studied abroad at the École nationale d'administration (ENA), and in 1987 he was posted to the New York office of JETRO . In 1994 he was secretary ( hishokan ) to Prime Ministers Hata and Murayama .

In 2004, Furuta left MITI to turn to politics. He won the 2005 gubernatorial election in Gifu with a clear majority, replacing Hiromu Kajiwara , who had been in office for 16 years and who was no longer running. His re-election for a second four-year term on January 25, 2009 was supported by the LDP , Kōmeitō and the Prefecture Association of the DPJ : With over 80% of the vote, he beat the CPJ-supported challenger Kazuhiko Kinoshita. Also in the gubernatorial elections in 2013 and 2017 , he was clearly confirmed in office against only one communist challenger.
