Halali! , known in English as Tally Ho! , is a board game for two players by Rudi Hoffmann , which appeared in 2000 as part of the games for two series by Kosmos-Verlag . It is a revision of the game jag und schlag by the same author, which was published in 1973 by Spear-Verlag and was used in 1978 under the title The great Hessen game: Knight Alfred chases the felt in the Hessian election campaign. The title refers to the hunter salute and hunting call .

Game content

In addition to the rules of the game, Halali! :

At the beginning the tiles are shuffled and placed face down on the game board, the middle field remains free. They are divided into three differently colored groups:

  • People (hunters and lumberjacks, brown) belong to one of the players and can only be moved by this player.
  • Predators (bears and foxes, blue) belong to the other player and can only be moved by the other player.
  • Neutral cards (ducks, pheasants and trees, green) can be moved by either player, with the exception of the trees, which are immovable.

Game flow

The players take turns drawing, either revealing a card or moving an already face-up card. Moving is always in an orthogonal direction and not across another map. A bear or a lumberjack can only be moved to the next space, all others can be moved as far as you like in the chosen direction.

Under certain circumstances, you can move to a field with a card that has already been turned up and beat it, for which you receive the point value of the card you hit. The hunter can only strike in the direction his rifle is pointing and his orientation is given by the random arrangement of the cards before the start of the game and cannot be changed during the course of the game.

You may not move a card onto the space from which you moved it on your immediately preceding turn. A neutral card that has just been revealed or moved may not be moved by the other player immediately afterwards.

After the last card has been revealed, the players have five turns left until the end of the game. During this period, players have the opportunity to remove their pieces from the game using four points on the edge of the field (in the middle of each side) and thus score more points. If the player cannot make a move, the game ends before these five moves have expired.

Due to the asymmetrical style of play of the two groups, the rules recommend scoring after two rounds so that each player has played the humans once and the predators once, after which the points from both games are added together.
