The half-moon aphid hover fly ( Parasyrphus punctulatus ) belongs to the family of hover flies (Syrphidae).
Identifying features
The species is 7–9 mm in size. The feelers are yellow on the underside. The eyes are not very hairy. The abdomen is marked with 3 yellow semicircular spots on the 3rd and 4th abdominal tergit, which do not reach the lateral edge in the male. The legs are black and the knees are yellow up to the base of the front rail. The wings have a light gray wing mark (pterostigma).
Occurrence
The half-moon aphid hover fly is common from Europe to Japan. It is often found in places on forest paths, bushes, forest edges and gardens near cities. Your flight time is from March to June with a peak in March / April.
Way of life
The larvae of the half-moon aphid hover fly are zoophagous , they feed and the like. a. of certain aphids. The larva overwinters as a pupa before hatching in spring. In the adult stage ( imago ), the actual hover fly, they feed as flower visitors on nectar and pollen from lower plants such as coltsfoot , creeping buttercup , cypress wolf milk , but also willow .
