The half moon ragwort ( Ophrys lunulata ) is a species of ragwurzen ( Ophrys ) in the orchid family (Orchidaceae). It blooms from March to April.
description
This herbaceous perennial plant reaches heights of 10 to 40 cm. This plant type forms two spherical to oval tubers Überdauerungsorgane. At the base of the stem there are no to two scale-like leaves , as well as three to six leaves in a base rosette and one to three sheathed leaves above.
The inflorescence is loose and usually comprises six to ten, rarely four flowers . The lower bracts are longer than the flowers. The sepals are pink to red in color, while the deep three-lobed lip appears red to dark brown with a bare yellowish to light brown edge. The mark usually has the shape of a crescent moon , which is where this orchid gets its name from.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36.
Location and distribution
This species can be found on grasslands, garrigues , former cultivated land and in light forests on moderately dry to moist, base-rich , but also slightly acidic soils up to a height of 800 meters above sea level. It is assumed that this orchid is only native to Sicily and the Aeolian Islands , as information z. B. about finds in Malta are questionable.
