Half Pint Heroes is a card game for 2 to 7 players by the game authors Johannes and Roland Goslar and Søren Schaffstein , which was released by Corax Games in 2017 . The trick game combines elements of the card game Wizard with a Hold'em - poker game . Thematically, the game is presented as a pub game, in which "brawls" and "shootings" are part of the rules.

Background and material

The gameplay of Half Pint Heroes corresponds to a trick game without trump cards , in this game stitches with poker combinations are obtained. As with Wizard , the players have to predict how many tricks the respective player would like to get and the other players can doubt this prediction with their poker chips . Points are awarded for tricks received, correct predictions and correct doubts and the winner is the player who got the most points at the end of the game. A round can be ended prematurely by a "fight" and by a "shootout" a player can end the entire game prematurely.

The game material consists of

  • 65 playing cards with the values 1 to 13 in five colors,
  • 28 announcement cards (7 decks with four cards from 0 to 3),
  • 7 poker chips,
  • a point block,
  • 7 cards with short rules and the order of tricks.

Game flow

Actions per game round
  • mix cards
  • Reveal top card
  • Issue and display cards according to the information on the displayed card
  • Specify forecast
  • Doubting predictions
  • Play cards
  • Settle stitches
  • Settle predictions and doubts
  • Distribute points

To prepare for the game, each player selects one of the seven characters or drink brands (Ursus Ale, Corax Dark, Purple Bubble Juice, Lovecraft Lager, Pink Bunny Liqueur, Schaffsteiner Pilsener and Chateau Blue Moon) and receives the respective poker chip and the set with four announcement cards each as well as a card with the short rules and the order of tricks. Before each round, the starting player or dealer (according to the rule “the player who last had a black eye”) shuffles the cards and reveals the top card. The turned up card shows at the bottom of the card how many cards are put in the display and how many cards each player gets in hand. The dealer distributes the cards accordingly to the other players and, if necessary, reveals up to four more cards in the display. After each player has his cards in hand and the display is on display, each player uses his announcement cards face down to predict how many tricks he will win in this round; he can take single cards or combine several. Then all players reveal their announcement at the same time. All players then use their poker chip at the same time for a counter bet in order to doubt an opponent's announcement by placing the chip on the corresponding card.

Starting with the player to the left of the first dealer, all players play one or more cards in clockwise order in the middle of the table until it was everyone's turn. These cards must result in a valid poker combination with zero or more of the cards in the center and the player with the highest combination wins the trick. The sequence of stitches is specified on the accompanying card and largely corresponds to the poker sequence. Accordingly, a single card is the lowest option, followed by a pair, two pairs, three of a kind, a straight of five cards, a full house, a flush (with five cards of the same suit), in four of a kind, a straight of five cards of the same color Suit, a quintuplet and a royal flush (5 cards of one suit with values 9 to 13). Within the same combination types, the higher card values of the cards played win. The winner of a trick plays the first card or combination for the next trick, and if he is out of cards, the next player to his left with cards starts. The round is played until there are no more cards in hand. Each player with cards in hand must discard at least one card for each trick. If a player wins three tricks in a row in a round, there is a "fight" and he wins the corresponding round immediately.

When all players have completely played their hand cards, the round is settled. It is first checked whether the players have received the announced number of tricks or, if not, other players have placed poker chips on the announcements. All players now receive 10 points for each trick won, the points indicated on the announcement cards for each correct announcement as well as a cross for the hit and an additional 20 points for correct doubts. All points received are entered in the point block. If a round was ended by a fight, the winner receives 10 points for each trick plus 30 points for the fight, all other players get nothing.

The game usually runs over 10 rounds, after which there is a final settlement. However, if a player manages to fulfill his prediction five times in a row, there will be a shootout and he immediately wins the game regardless of the number of points of the players. With normal final accounting, all round results as well as the longest continuous series of correct announcements (including brawls) are multiplied by 10 and added up. At the end of the game, the winner of the game is the player with the most points and in the event of a tie, the player who has won the most games via a brawl wins.

expenditure

Half Pint Heroes was developed by the German game designers Johannes and Roland Goslar and Søren Schaffstein . It was published in 2017 after a financing campaign on the “Spieleschmiede” platform belonging to the spiele-offensive.de website for the International Game Days in Essen at the game publisher Corax Games in an English and a German version. 773 people took part in the campaign, raising a total of more than € 21,000. In the same year the game was published in Russian by Magellan and in Japanese by Ten Days Game.

In 2018, Half-Pint Heroes: Happy Hour was an expansion of the game. Each player receives a set of stickers that he can stick on the cards during the game and that change the rules for these cards for the entire game.
