Haliclona stilensis is a species from the class of horned silica sponges .

features

The external appearance and color of the sponge can vary widely. They often form thin, patch-like crusts of around 4 × 5 cm and a thickness of 0.1-0.5 cm, sometimes larger masses of around 20 × 8 × 5 cm, with smooth, rounded lobes or branched branches, or tall , chimney-like forms with large, terminal oscula . The surface is smooth. The oscula form either extensive collections of chimney-shaped structures or small elevations that are reminiscent of volcanic cones . The coloration is described as beige to purple, the edges of the oscula are only pale in color.

Haliclona stilensis differs from the very similar species Haliclona cinerea, which is widespread in the North Atlantic , in particular in its color and the fact that it does not secrete mucus when touched.

Occurrence

The species is distributed in the area of influence of the Benguela Current from the coast of Namibia to the south coast of South Africa. It colonizes the shallow subtidal in water depths of 1–15 m on moderately exposed to protected coastal areas, where it can often be found under stones, but also on mussel shells and algae.

Taxonomy

The first description of Haliclona stilensis was in 1933 by the British zoologist Maurice Burton on a specimen of Stilbaai on the South African coast of the Indian Ocean .
