The Burg Halych ( Ukrainian замок Галицький , Russian Galitsch ) is the residue of a hilltop castle to 260  m above sea level. NN on the right (southern) bank of the Dniester in western Ukraine in today's village of Halych , Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast . In the Middle Ages , the principality Halitsch of Kievan Rus was ruled from here . (see also: Volhynia )

The Galicia region takes its name from Halitsch / Galitsch, but should not be confused with the Principality of Halitsch.

Today there are remains of the castle in Halytsch, which existed from the 14th to the 17th century. Construction began in 1367, but there were previous buildings that were first mentioned in 1114 as a fortified citadel. Originally it was probably a wooden building that was later expanded into a strong castle for the Galician princes. At the beginning of the 17th century the Tatars tried several times to conquer the castle, which they succeeded in 1621. After the destruction and the laborious construction, the castle could only experience a few quiet years. The final destruction by the Tatars is dated as early as 1658.
