Hallatar is a Finnish death doom band from Jyväskylä that was founded in 2016.

history

The band was formed by Swallow-the-Sun and Trees-of-Eternity guitarist Juha Raivio, Amorphis singer Tomi Joutsen and former HIM drummer Gas Lipstick. The cornerstone for the group was Raivio, whose life partner and Trees of Eternity singer Aleah Starbridge died on April 18, 2016. Raivio then began to write texts, whereupon Hallatar was founded. In 2017 the album No Stars upon the Bridge was released, on which the Draconian singer Heike Langhans can be heard as a guest musician. The music for the album was written by Raivio in just a week. In 2018 the group could be seen at the Tuska Open Air Metal Festival .

style

Tobias Blum from Rock Hard assigned the album to Doom Metal . In an interview with him, Raivio stated that the songwriting for the album was based on lyrics, music and song fragments from Starbridge's PC. Two issues previously, Blum had reviewed No Stars upon the Bridge, defining the style more precisely than Death Doom. The music is particularly melodic and dynamic. On the album one also vacillates between "sublime beauty and abysmal desolation". Sebastian Kessler from Metal Hammer also reviewed the album and described the music as "deep black Doom Metal from which the Finn's grief over his loss oozes every second". The singing consists of deep growls and clear vocals. The instrumentation of the songs has been reduced and consists mostly of counting riffs and occasional keyboard sounds.
