The Thuringian freight yard was a station in Halle (Saale) , which was in operation from 1871 to 1991 for cargo handling.
history
It was built during the economic boom of the Wilhelminian era as an extension of the freight yard facilities south of the Thuringian passenger station at the time and thus became the starting point for freight transport on the Halle – Bebra railway line . Around 1890, the tracks in Halle were fundamentally redesigned with the construction of the main train station . The Thuringian freight station lost its direct connection to the Thuringian Railway. When in 1895 the port railway Halle from Sophienhafen and in 1896 the railway line Halle Klaustor – Hettstedt of the Halle-Hettstedter Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft , to which the port railway belonged, started operations, the Thuringian freight yard developed into a large freight yard for this new railway line as well the industrial railway opened in 1895 , which connected many factories and businesses in the south of Halle.
In 1968 the Halle-Hettstedter Eisenbahn was finally shut down in the course of the construction of Halle-Neustadt and the Thuringian freight station lost its importance, as it was only used for the few remaining industrial connections in the south of the city. After the political change and the associated economic decline and the redistribution of freight traffic to the road, the station was finally closed in 1991.
Todays situation
The station area including the track apron has now been converted into a park and sports facility. Some buildings from earlier times are still there today and are still used by companies or associations and also by Deutsche Bahn.
