The Hallerschloss or Sparbersbach Castle (until the 18th century) is a castle located on the western slope of the Ruckerlberg in the Graz district of Waltendorf . Most of its current shape dates from the 17th century. It was redesigned many times during the 19th and 20th centuries. Its history goes back to the 13th century.

history

The castle was probably built by a knight von Breuner with the inclusion of an older structure in order to secure the streets and the property of the sovereign. From the second half of the 13th century, the Rietenburger family of servants sat in the castle. On March 23, 1389, the castle and the village of Waltendorf were sold to Hertlein von Lichtenstein. Lichtenstein donated the property to the Rein monastery on July 5, 1359 , which on October 25, 1399 exchanged it with Duke Wilhelm for other goods.

In the 15th century the castle was owned by the Giebinger family. After many years of inheritance disputes, the property was sold to Mathias Aman in 1580, who sold it on to a servant of the Archduke. In the following years the owners changed frequently. In 1652 the castle went to Hans Georg von Kaltenhausen. At that time, the property included the castle, a farm , a few stables, farmsteads and barns , an ice pit , a vegetable and tree garden, a vineyard with a press, two ponds and several fields, forests and meadows. Until 1713 the castle had many different owners. In 1713 Sigmund Müller acquired the property and handed it over to his son-in-law Dr. Friedrich Karl Haller, who gave the castle the name "Hallerschloss". In 1923 it was rebuilt according to plans by Julius Kubik.

During the siege of Graz under Napoleon in 1809, Austria's general field marshal lieutenant Count Gyulai had his headquarters in the palace. In 1827 the composer Franz Schubert was a guest at the Hallerschloss. In 1945 negotiations between the Red Army and the British Army about a change of occupying power took place on the premises of the castle .

Furnishing

The Hallerschloss is a two-storey complex with a U-shaped floor plan. On the west side there is a small corner tower with a tent roof. The southeast tower and the neo-renaissance arcade courtyard are from the renovation in 1923.

In the Hallerschloss there is a chapel which is consecrated to St. Catherine. The stucco in the cartilage style with the coat of arms of Count Breuner and the rest of the interior furnishings date from 1660 and are attributed to the artist Mathias Camin .
