Hallgrímur Helgason

Hallgrímur Helgason (born February 18, 1959 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic author.

Life

After studying at the Reykjavík College of Arts and Crafts from 1979-80, he attended the Art Academy in Munich for one year. Since 1982 he has been working in Reykjavík both as an artist and as a writer. His first novel Hella was published in 1990. His international breakthrough came with the novel 101 Reykjavík , which was filmed in 2000 under the direction of Baltasar Kormákur .

In addition to other novels, Hallgrímur Helgason wrote radio plays, essays, plays and appeared as a stand-up comedian. His pictures have been shown in over 20 solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions in Europe and the USA.

In 2012 he took part in the Berlin International Literature Festival.

Honors

Hallgrímur Helgason received the 2001 Icelandic Literature Prize for The Doubtful Pleasure of Being Dead . In 2010, at the Frankfurt Book Fair, he was awarded the Prize for the Most Curious Book of the Year for Ten Tips to End Murder and Start Washing Up . For the novel Sextíu kíló af sólskini , Hallgrímur Helgason was again awarded the Icelandic Literature Prize for 2018 in the “Fiction” category.
