Hallie Rubenhold (* 1971 in Los Angeles , California ) is a British historian and author .

Life

Rubenhold was born in Los Angeles to a British father and an American mother. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Master of Arts in British History and History of Art from the University of Leeds .

In 2005, her first work The Covent Garden Ladies: Pimp General Jack and The Extraordinary Story of Harris's List appeared on Harris's List of Covent Garden Ladies , a compendium of London prostitutes that was published from 1757 to 1795. Based on Rubenhold's book, the BBC produced the documentary The Harlots Handbook in 2006 , which Rubenhold himself presented. The Harlot's Handbook followed in 2007 ; Harris's List , in which Rubenhold put together a selection of the most interesting entries from the real Harris's List.

Her next book, Lady Worsley's Whim, dealt with the Seymour Dorothy Fleming and Sir Richard Worsley, 7th Baronet scandal . Your book was the inspiration for the screenplay for the 2015 published BBC telefilm The Scandalous Lady W .

Then Rubenhold wrote two novels, the plot of which unfolds against the background of the French Revolution . The first part Mistress of My Fate was released in 2011; the second book The French Lesson followed in 2016.

Rubenhold became known to a wider audience through her book The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper . In it, she examined the life stories of Mary Ann Nichols , Annie Chapman , Elizabeth Stride , Catherine Eddowes and Mary Jane Kelly ; the "canonical" five victims of the serial killer Jack the Ripper . Contrary to popular belief that all Ripper victims were prostitutes , Rubenhold argued that this can only be conclusively proven for Mary Jane Kelly and Elizabeth Stride. According to Rubenhold, much of the previous literature on the case ignored the life stories of the five women before the murders, which would "dehumanize" the victims. With her book Rubenhold wanted to give them back their dignity. The Five was awarded the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction in 2019 . The reactions of "Ripperologists" to the book, however, were sometimes very critical, with Rubenhold being accused, among other things, of having a " feminist agenda" and wanting to link the Ripper case with the MeToo debate, which Rubenhold, however, sharply rejected.

In addition to her work as a writer, Rubenhold worked as a consultant on the creation of historical television productions such as City of Vice , The Scandalous Lady W and Harlots .

She lives in London with her husband.
