Halothamnus hierochunticus is a species of the genus Halothamnus fromthe foxtail family ( Amaranthaceae ).

features

Halothamnus hierochunticus is a 40–50 cm high annual plant with blue-green twigs that smells slightly unpleasant of rancid butter. The semicircular leaves are linear to lanceolate-triangular and up to 30 (rarely 50) mm long. The flowers are in 6-13 mm spacing on the branches and with 2.8 to 3.3 mm somewhat shorter than her bract and their bracts , their Tepalen are triangular. The scars are trimmed at the top. The winged fruit reaches 10–16 mm in diameter, its wings set in the middle of the fruit height. The fruit tube has concave side walls with sharply protruding ridges. At its base, a narrow, protruding wall surrounds the very large, rounded pits.

In the lower part of the plant, heavier fruits with short wings arise, in the upper part, however, light fruits with large wings ( heterocarpy ).

Occurrence

The range of Halothamnus hierochunticus stretches through the fertile crescent of Lebanon , Syria , Turkey (Southeast Anatolia), Israel and Palestine via Jordan and Iraq to western Iran . At some isolated locations in southern and northern Iran, the species could have been introduced as field weeds. It grows in fields, where it can become an annoying weed in places, as well as in ruderal locations (roadsides, ruins), often on salty soils, on loess or sand, up to 1500 m above sea level.

Taxonomy

The first description of Halothamnus hierochunticus was in 1912 by Joseph Friedrich Nicolaus Bornmüller as Salsola hierochuntica . The species was incorporated into the genus Halothamnus in 1981 by Viktor Petrovich Botschanzew .
