Hamasia

Hamasia is the historical name of a province that included Asmara and the surrounding area, which is now part of Eritrea .

The corresponding region is now divided between the regions Maekel , Debub , Semienawi Kayih Bahri , Gash-Barka and Anseba .

The population of Hamasia are mainly ancient oriental Christians and Christians of the Orthodox Tewahedo Church. There is also a minority of Sunni Muslims as well as Catholic and Lutheran communities.

The former region of Hamasia was simply called Habeschistan ( land on the Red Sea ).
