Village in Gash-Barka

Gash-Barka is located in the southwest of Eritrea and borders Sudan to the west and Ethiopia to the south . The region is named after the two rivers Gash and Barka , which do not carry water all year round .

The region consists of the districts Agordat , Barentu, Dghe , Forto , Gogne , Haykota , Logo Anseba , Mensura , Mogola , Molki , Omhajer , Shambuko , Tesseney and Ober-Gash .

In Gash-Barka - according to the Eritrean understanding and in accordance with an international arbitration commission - the village of Badme is located in the Yirga triangle, which Ethiopia claimed as part of the Tigray region ; the border dispute over this place triggered the Eritrea-Ethiopia war significantly.

economy

The region is called the "bread basket of Eritrea" because it is agriculturally relatively fertile. There are said to be around 3.5 million head of cattle here. Millet, sesame, cotton, bananas, tomatoes, onions, green pepper, melons and gum arabic are grown.

In terms of mineral resources, there is marble and gold in Gash-Barka. In Augaro there are remains of the gold mining operated by the Italian colonial rulers .
