The Barka (also called Khor Baraka in Sudan ) is a seasonal river in Eritrea and Sudan . During the time of the British administration in Sudan, the river was called "Gazelle" because its course changes constantly due to the heavy dune migration.

geography

The Barka rises on the northwest slopes of the central highlands of Eritrea, in the Gash-Barka region. It flows north and joins Anseba shortly before the border with Sudan . Other important tributaries are the Mogoraib and Langeb . The Barka finally flows into the heavily silted Tokar Delta near the village of Tokar into the Red Sea . The exact mouth cannot be determined because the delta is over 45 miles long and 80 km wide.

Hydrology

The river only flows a few months a year. It only reaches the Sudanese border during the rainy season in the summer months. Nevertheless, it is one of the most important water dispensers in Eastern Sudan (Baraka arb. " Blessing power "). It has an average discharge of 0.8 km³ per year.
