Mario Pacheco (* 6. November 1950 in Madrid , † 26. November 2010 ) was a Spanish photographer and music producer , who with the label Nuevos Medios the Nuevo Flamenco and thus the fusion of flamenco with blues , jazz and African music promoted.

Pacheo's father and grandfather were in the cinema business; He started his professional career as a photographer. He traveled to Great Britain in the late 1960s, photographed Jimi Hendrix at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970 . He later moved to Formentera , where he made the first recordings of artists such as Pau Ribas Jo, La Dona i el Gripau with a portable Nagra tape recorder, which were released on the Catalan label Edigsa . Pacheo then founded the Nuevos Medios label with his business partner David Miró, a grandson of Joan Miró , in 1982 , whose logo was designed by Joan Miró. This was followed by music from the Spanish Nuevo Flamenco scene, which is connected to the awakening ( Movida ) in the Spanish cultural scene after the end of the Franco dictatorship. The label also sold music from the ECM , Hannibal, Cherry Red, Rough Trade and Factory Records labels . In 1985 he organized the first tour of Spain for the band The Smiths .

Pacheco initially recorded artists such as Ray Heredia , Aurora, La Barbería del Sur and Pata Negra on his label, which was often referred to as the Motown of flamenco , and later musicians of modern flamenco such as Moraíto Chico and Diego Carrasco , as well as fusion projects by Ketama with Toumani Diabaté and Danny Thompson or guitarist Pepe Habichuela with the Bollywood strings . The label sampler Los Jóvenes Flamencos made the music of Ray Heredia, Jorge Pardo , Amargós y Benavent , La Barbería del Sur and Ramon El Portugués known to a wide audience. He also mediated the contact between Dave Holland and Pepe Habichuela, which led to their joint album Hands (2010).

Pacheco has also published music by the rock bands Joy Division and New Order , The Smiths and jazz by Keith Jarrett , Pat Metheny , Steve Reich , Bill Evans and Art Pepper , Latin music by Bola de Nieve , Beny More , Golpes Bajos , Pata Negra and Martirio .

Pacheco, who was last president of the Unión Fonográfica Independiente (UFI), died of cancer in November 2010.
