Hamburg Aviation is the brand name of the "Luftfahrtcluster Metropolregion Hamburg eV", an association made up of companies, research and educational institutions and the City of Hamburg, which promotes the development of the aviation industry in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region . With more than 40,000 employees in 2012, it is one of the largest locations for the civil aviation industry worldwide.

The aviation location of the Hamburg metropolitan region

The aircraft manufacturer Airbus and Lufthansa Technik , the world market leader in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of civil aircraft , are based in the Hamburg metropolitan region . Hamburg Airport, which opened as an airship port in 1912, is one of the longest-serving airports in the world and is still operated at its original location. There are also more than 300 specialized suppliers, including branches of Diehl Aerosystems GmbH . Many of the numerous small and medium-sized companies are represented by the business associations Hanse Aerospace eV and HECAS.

Four of the Hamburg universities offer a study program with a strong aviation focus:

The DLR German Aerospace Center Institutes for aerospace medicine and air transport systems are also based in Hamburg .

The cabin focus: Crystal Cabin Award and Aircraft Interiors Expo

A particular focus of many aviation companies in the Hamburg metropolitan region is the interior design of aircraft and the design of aircraft cabins: Airbus develops and builds the A380 cabins here and Lufthansa Technik AG designs in-flight entertainment systems and luxury equipment for private aircraft. Numerous small and medium-sized companies also specialize in cabin design, equipment, technology or in-flight entertainment & communications (IFE & C).

The focus of the aviation location becomes clear at the international trade fair Aircraft Interiors Expo, which has been held annually in Hamburg since 2002 . The Crystal Cabin Award for extraordinary product innovations in aircraft interiors has been presented at this fair since 2007. The prize is donated by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

The Hamburg Aviation cluster

Such an accumulation of companies along a value chain and interweaving with research and training institutions, as is the case in the Hamburg metropolitan region, is called a cluster in economics . A cluster is defined by a triple helix structure: the interaction of business, research and teaching as well as the public sector.

In order to promote the development of the Hamburg aviation industry cluster, the "Aviation Initiative Hamburg" was formed in 2001 from companies, universities and authorities. In 2011, with 15 founding members, the association “Aviation Cluster Metropolregion Hamburg e. V. “Hamburg Aviation is the association's brand name. Its purpose is to jointly coordinate initiatives to support the aviation industry in the region. Examples of his work are the initiation of collaborations in research, the supervision of EU research projects, but also regular industry meetings such as the Hamburg Aviation Forum and the organization of events to secure young talent.

Winning the top cluster competition

In 2008, the then Aviation Initiative Hamburg was recognized as a top cluster in the top cluster competition of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research ( BMBF ). The location was then funded with a total volume of 40 million euros. The money was used to partially finance numerous research and development projects together with companies. The total investment in research and development as a result of the profit amounts to over 80 million euros.

Joint projects at the location: ZAL and HCAT

The Center for Applied Aviation Research (ZAL) was founded in 2009 as a joint project initiated by Hamburg Aviation between universities, aviation companies, associations, research institutions and the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. The Hamburg Center of Aviation Training (HCAT), among other things, serves to qualify skilled workers and promote young talent.

Initiatives to promote young talent

Securing qualified junior staff is a key focus of Hamburg Aviation's work. Numerous projects, which are jointly supported by business, the city and universities, serve this goal. Examples include the Faszination Technik Klub, which offers children and young people lectures and events on the subject of aviation, and the DLR School Lab student laboratories at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg, where students can carry out technical and scientific experiments.

International cooperation

Another field of activity of the association is the promotion of international cooperation between the aviation locations. To this end, Hamburg Aviation set up the European Aerospace Cluster Partnership (EACP) in May 2009. The aim of the organization is the exchange of knowledge and the initiation of cross-border cooperation projects. One of them is the CARE: Clean Aerospace Regions project, which is funded by the European Commission. In its framework, 10 partners work together, 8 of which are members of the EACP, to promote research into eco-efficient technologies and processes for the air transport system.
