Hamburg Maritime Association

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hamburgische Verein Seefahrt eV (HVS) is a sailing association that trains young people to become ocean sailors .

history

The Hamburg shipowner Albert Ballin founded the HVS in 1903 to put a yacht ( Hamburg ) under the flag of the Hanseatic city into the race as competition for Kaiser Wilhelm's yacht Meteor . The Hamburg crew (crew) was set up according to the principle of “physical training for young people through offshore sailing”. The Hamburg sailed so successfully that Kaiser Wilhelm recruited her skipper .

The club ships are still supported by Hamburg merchants and shipowners according to the old Hanseatic tradition. Destinations such as the Baltic Sea , North Sea and even the Atlantic are sailed with the yachts as part of international high- sea regattas , in compliance with the association's purpose of promoting young people to become ambitious deep-sea sailors .

In the anniversary year 2003, a transatlantic regatta from Newport (Rhode Island) to Cuxhaven / Hamburg, the DaimlerChrysler North Atlantic Challenge race, was organized under the direction of the North German Regatta Club (NRV) .
