Hamid Guska

Hamid Guska (born February 15, 1953 in Glavatičevo ) is a Bosnian boxing trainer and former amateur boxer.

Hamid Guska started his career in 1974 at BK Partizan Sarajevo . The club later changed its name to BK Željezničar Sarajevo and became part of SD Željezničar. His amateur career ended in 1980 after an arm injury. In 1981 he was appointed coach of the BK Željezničar.

Coaching career at BK Željezničar

With the BK Željezničar Guska won the title of the second boxing league of Yugoslavia in 1986. The promotion to the first boxing league of Yugoslavia was the greatest success since the club was founded. From 1986 to 1992 Željezničar was one of the strongest boxing clubs in Yugoslavia . Numerous boxers of the club won the Yugoslav championships and medals at major boxing tournaments.

Guska's protégés at the time included: Fikret Kadić, Almedin Fetahović , Stephen Mwema , David Ouma, Zijad Hodžić, Vibor Ćorković, Predrag Bartula, Zaim Numanović, Kazimir Radoš, Rifet Kadić, Afrim Majanci, Ibro Jakupović, Izafet Mrjić, Izafet Mrjić Mrkulić, Mensur Peljto , Draženko Đokić, Muhamed Jeleč, Mergim Šalja, Said Čolpa, Edin Bajrić u. v. a.

With the beginning of the war in 1992 ( Bosnian War ), BK Željezničar was dissolved.

Bosnia Herzegovina

In 1993 Guska was appointed coach of the newly formed national boxing team of Bosnia-Herzegovina . His boxer Almedin Fetahović won gold at the 1993 Mediterranean Games in France . It was the first gold medal for Bosnia-Herzegovina as an independent republic that was fought for in a major sporting event. Guska looked after the Bosnian national team when they first participated in the European Championships in 1993 in Bursa . Heavyweight Edin Bajrić lost in the round of 16 against Danny Williams from Great Britain . After the EM, Guska took a break from boxing. In 2001 he was appointed coach of the Bosnian national youth team. At the Junior European Championship in 2001, Aldin Avdić won bronze in the super heavyweight division. It was the first medal for Bosnia at an EM. From 2002 to 2009 Guska was the head coach of all national teams in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Under his supervision, the Bosnian boxers won four bronze medals at major sporting events: Jasmin Hasić (Junior European Championships 2007 in Sombor), Memnun Hadžić (European Championships 2008 in Liverpool ), Nadir Čolpa (Student European Championships 2008 in Novi Sad) and Velibor Vidić ( Mediterranean Games 2009 in Pescara).

In August 2009, Guska was fired as head coach. He announced his retirement from boxing and took over the post of school director in a primary school in Hrasnica, Ilidža. His successor in the national team was the 1984 Olympic champion Anton Josipović .

Hamid Guska is the most successful Bosnian selection coach of all time, as his protégés won four medals at European Championships and two at Mediterranean Games.
