Hamilton Basso

Hamilton Basso (* 5. September 1904 in New Orleans , Louisiana as Joseph Hamilton Basso ; † 13. May 1964 in New Haven , Connecticut ) is an American novel was author and journalist .

He was Associate Editor for The New Yorker magazine for more than 20 years . He wrote 11 novels, mostly about the American South. His best-known novel is The View from Pompey's Head , the story of a New York lawyer who returns to his southern US homeland to solve the mystery of a famous writer. The book was on the bestseller list for over a year in 1954.

With his novel The Light Infantry Ball he reached the finals of the US National Book Award in 1960.

In 1955 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters .
