Hammada du Draa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hammada du Draa is a hammada , i.e. a rock and stone desert, and is located as a rocky plateau in the Sahara - Tindouf province in the extreme west of Algeria , named after the Wadi Draa , to whose valley the plateau breaks off in the northwest in the border region to Morocco . In the west, the Moroccan provinces Assa-Zag and Es Semara also have a share in the plateau.

The Hammada du Draa extends from the south-west to north-east over a length of almost 400 km from the area west of Mahbes to east of Oum el Assel , based on the uniform appearance from the satellite perspective in terms of color and structure . The width of the plateau is around 100 km. In the southeast, the Hammada is followed by a drainless depression. The provincial capital Tindouf lies at the transition from the Hammada to this valley.

The height of the Hammada rises from around 400 m on the south-eastern edge to partially 600 m on the north-western edge.

National road 50 is important for traffic through the Hammada du Draa . It runs from Tindouf parallel to the Moroccan border to the northeast and thus connects the region with the capital of the neighboring province of Bechar and the Algerian highway network.

In the area of Western Sahara , the Moroccan Wall cuts through the Hammada du Draa from north to south along the border and then follows the southern edge of the Hammada westwards to the area of Mahbes.
