history

In 1914 the first exhibition hall was completed for the automobile exhibition. It was located north of the present fairgrounds on the then Exerzier -Platz . The square was built together with the entrance building in 1937 according to the plans of the architect Richard Ermisch and was then called the square in front of the fair . The design of the square was by Richard Lesser and Ludwig Lesser . It was given its current name on October 14, 1961. On January 20, 1989, partial areas of the square in front of exhibition halls 21 and 17/18 were incorporated into the street landscape.

Memorials

A memorial for Dag Hammarskjöld was erected across from the north entrance to the exhibition center. In 1997 the kinetic sculpture Games of the Wind by Manrique Césa was erected next to the memorial plaque for Hammarskjöld .
